Description
Governology Pty Ltd is a boutique law firm dedicated to improving the governance of not-for-profit organisations, particularly associations. Our team helps purpose-driven organisations achieve their mission through expert governance and legal advice.
We are seeking a lawyer or soon-to-graduate law student eager to develop expertise in governance within the associations and charities sector.
Our specialty is working with association and charity clients on their constitutions. We also deliver Board governance training and advise on structures and mergers, Board matters, membership structures and processes and General Meetings.
In this role, you will:
- Advise on governance, law, legal structures, taxation and operations to a range of association and charity clients.
- Review constitutions for companies limited by guarantee and incorporated associations, draft Discussion Papers for new constitutions, and write new constitutions.
- Present or contribute to governance training for clients and at conferences.
- Assist in the development and application of Governology's in-house legal templates.
- Conduct legal research and draft letters of advice on various matters
- Manage and maintain client files effectively.
- Participate in marketing and business development initiatives.
Who We're Looking For
Essential:
- Completed law degree or currently studying law, and current practising certificate to practise law in Australia or pathway to practising certificate.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn about associations and charities and the relevant principles of governance and law.
- Strong verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey governance and legal principles in plain English and to persuade clients regarding best practice
- Excellent written communication skills including professional document presentation
- Ability to learn to craft constitution clauses and overall documents using in-house templates to achieve client governance goals
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and ability to learn other commercial or in-house systems including FileMaker database
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and multiple projects and work independently
- High attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
Highly Desirable:
- Experience in the associations and charities sector including volunteer experience
- Knowledge of Corporations Law, Associations Incorporation Acts, company secretarial duties, or governance frameworks.

Further Details
Ideally, the position is 4-5 days a week. Experienced candidates looking for casual or part-time are also encouraged to apply. Our offices are at Artarmon on Sydney's north shore, adjacent to the train station. The successful candidate may have the opportunity to work from home. Full training will be provided.
